Symposium Talent Contest
Symposium Talent Contest is a mid-west based dance competition that has been hosting events for over 30 years. Symposium's directors are sensitive to the needs of dancers, teachers and parents alike because they fill all of those rolls themselves. Melissa was a competitive dancer and even competed at Symposium. She now owns a dance studio and attends several competitions each year with her students. Melissa and Jason have 5 children so they understand the parent perspective as well! For the Symposium staff our contests are about enjoying weekends of dance and creating and fostering friendships with all who join them.
The Symposium judging pool is comprised of teachers and industry professionals who also have teaching experience. The Westphals believe that teachers are the best judges because they understand and appreciate the journey that the teacher/choreographer and dancers have been on leading them to the performance. Symposium uses a panel of three judges who all complete a video critique and digital score sheet for each routine.
At Symposium we strive to promote age appropriate music selections, costumes and choreography. We thank you for letting your dancers shine in a manner which is respectful of their age.
· Symposium’s Angel Award will be given to the highest scoring Junior routine of each show. It is given in honor of the Westphal’s niece, Maggie, whose life was taken by SIDS. A portion of the entry fees of the Angel Award recipients will be given to the SIDS Foundation.
· Symposium’s Strength Award will be given to the highest scoring Senior routine of each show. It is given in honor of a student in Melissa’s dance studio who underwent two life-saving bone marrow transplants when she was 5 years old. Allie is living proof that strength comes from within and can be limitless when accompanied by the love and support of family and friends. A portion of the entry fees of the Strength Award recipients will be given to Ronald McDonald House Charities.
· Symposium’s Award Option will allow studio owners to opt to have their group routines not receive their trophies. This option must be selected during the check-out process of on-line registration. In lieu of receiving trophies for group routines a donation will be made to the National Safe Haven Alliance in honor of the Westphal's daughter, who came to them via the the Safe Haven program.
· Symposium’s Parent Show-Downs will have the mom’s and dad’s competing for prizes during our 10-minute breaks! You just never know what we are going to come up with but be a good sport and join us on stage! Be sure that you bring along some loud friends as crowd noise just might help your chances of winning!
